LEAVES OF GREEN
The new leaves of the ivy do not
look around testing air for danger,
they simply burst forth in joy like
Christmas presents torn from their
buds in soft tissue-green naiveté,
full of such vim of sap and bounce
and do only slowly harden up tough
in their darkened gills and yet it’s
all of it that foments the poison.
